3/22/24 Drove Really Far and Got Really Lucky

Updated: Apr 12, 2024

Weather pattern is taking a turn for the worse, or the better depending on how you look at it, but the forecast for the coming days shows colder, wetter, and windier weather than we've had lately. The past day or 2 were actually insanely windy... I picked a good time to go to my parents house in Delaware to try to capitalize on the spring season kicking off in the Mid Atlantic (kidding, I chose a bad time). I drove down here on Wednesday and went to the Rappahannock River where I planned to kayak fish for Stripers and really I wanted to catch a little bit of everything, Shad, Bass, Striper... whatever else. I arrived to some 30mph winds, bluebird skies and a low tide. I planned to kayak miles of this river as I figured that would be necessary to find the golden nugget spots, however I scratched the idea as I stared at the launch ramp low tide and listened to the trees roar in the wind. I have been in this place before.. where you know you shouldn't launch the kayak, but you do it anyway, and you regret it 5 hours later as you are paddling back against the wind and the tide... yea, no, not this time. I had fished almost the whole night before for Stripers and got just a few hours of car sleep so any adversity would be compounded as I was already tired and sore.
