Couple more trips this past week. Im really just in Fluke mode at this point, even though the Flukin has been pretty meager. Made one ocean trip, and 2 Bay trips in the past week which resulted in a mild uptick in Fluke action.
I fished by myself in the Boat one morning and stayed pretty local in Narragansett Bay. I pounded a few areas and had my best Fluke trip of the season catching 3 fish in the 22"-23.5" range and another about 19.5". Additionally had 15 or so shorts. 4 keepers, best day yet.
Another day, friend was with me, we stayed inside the Bay and caught 5 Keepers between us. 30 shorts. Fishing depths anywhere from 15-70'
Then the ocean day. We ran to the east to Sakonnet thinking the Flukin should be better over there. Wasn't happy to find that all the areas Id done well in past years in June were all covered up with dink seabass making it impossible to fish. Ran up shallower in 30-40' and was able to get 3 keepers and handful of shorts, but it fizzled out pretty quick and never picked back up. Tried some deeper spots, actually ended up getting into the Ling (red hake) pretty good in about 90' at one spot. We had a dozen or so in pretty short order, keeping the nicer models. Those fish mostly hit squid but a couple were on metal or gulp. Once the ocean Flukin proved to be futile we came inside the Bay and put another 4 keepers in the box, with only a handful of shorts. Slow day overall, but 7 keepers was the best Fluke day my boat has seen. We even got a couple decent keeper seabass up inside the bay in 50'.
Sounds like the Bassin in Newport has kicked up a notch. Big fish making their presence known. Block Island too, definitely go time if you want to get into some big Bass. Somehow after Striper fishing from shore all my life, my interest to Striper fish in the boat is slim to none, all I really want to do is Fluke fish.
