Some Northeast wind, overcast and cooler temps, took a ride down to Point Judith to see if the fishy weather had anything biting along the West Wall. Went out for the afternoon with no expectations of actually catching any fish, but with all the Bonito action to the east and some scattered Bonito action locally it seemed like it was worth a shot.
I fished my way out toward the end of the wall with nothing to show until eventually I got a good bite jigging a 60 gram metal down low in the water column. Turned out to be a nice Bluefish over 30" which I got up to the rocks and inevitably broke off as I did not have korkers and my 25lb leader certainly wasn't strong enough to swing the fish up on the rocks. As I was fighting the fish I saw a dorsal fin pop up in the vicinity of my fish, which Im pretty sure was a Sandbar Shark that had come over to check out all the commotion. Theres been a lot of Sandbar sharks around lately, especially at Block Island, and they have been wreaking havoc on the hooked Stripers and Bluefish out there, taking people fish right off their line. This one didn't try to eat my Bluefish but it was definitely thinking about it.
Another guy I know showed up and started fishing with me, and he ended up catching a nice Bonito around 3pm on a chartreuse Epoxy Jig. That would be the only Bonito I saw this day. I would end up catching 3 Bluefish after that, after switching over to an Xrap. The XR-10 is a great little plug which when reeled fast has caught many Bonito for me over the years, and the Blues like it too. Blues I caught were mixed size 3-10lbs, and I was able to get redemption on the one I lost with a nice 33"er. Saw only a few anglers out there this day, one or 2 of which were targeting Fluke and catching them at a pretty quick rate, though all small.
